Muffin’s Pet Connection -
A Multi-Service Pet Organization

by David Ansel Weiss

Thousands of pets and pet owners in the New York Metropolitan area, owe a debt to a little stray dog named Muffin, who inspired a couple from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to start a non-profit organization that specializes in providing services for pets.

Norm & Jude Sunden are the Bay Ridge couple. Their organization is Muffin’s Pet Connection. Although most of the pets they help are dogs and cats, they also assist exotic pets like ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and Iguanas.

Would you like to adopt a cat or dog - or have one adopted? Want to have a pet spayed or neutered? Seeking advice on such problems as keeping a cat from scratching furniture or helping your dog cope with the heat? Need a pet emergency number? Chances are Norm and Jude can help you.

Out of their Bay Ridge headquarters they operate an adoption service for cats and dogs, an Outreach program that does everything from leasing cat traps and cages to referring pet owners to trainers, groomers and vets. They also supply discount certificates for spaying and neutering and if all that is not enough, they find time to publish a newsletter and maintain a database that has 2,000 ‘hits’ a a week.

One of Muffin’s Pet Connection’s most active service is it’s adoption program that has placed more than 7,300 cats and dogs. They do not physically handle the adoptions (they have no shelter) but on their website they publish descriptions and color photos of the animals that to be adopted and they facilitate the adoption by making sure the prospective owners qualify as good ‘parents’.

At the moment Norm and Jude’s main goal their Spay /Neuter Certificate program. Here they have signed up more than 70 veterinarians - not only in Brooklyn but also in the four other boroughs as well as Westchester and Long Island - to do these operations at a discount with a Spay/Neuter Certificate that Muffin’s Pet Connection provides at Low Cost.

‘Spaying and Neutering is a priority with us because warm winters have ended up producing so many unwanted cats and dogs," Jude says. "People don’t realize that one unspayed female cat and her offspring can reproduce 420,000 cats in seven years."

Norm and Jude have a hectic life tending to all their pet services but they feel that they - and their memory of Muffin - are rewarded when a pet problem is solved, a cat or dog adopted and a Spay/Neuter certificate is used.
