ANIMAL NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ...Stop Horse Slaughter in the USA...Horse meat is not eaten in the United States but is shipped overseas, primarily to France, Belgium and Japan, where it is considered a delicacy. Nearly 100,000 American horses—thoroughbreds, family ponies, wild horses, carriage horses, and others—are slaughtered annually in the United States, or sent to Canada or Mexico for slaughter, to appease the palates of foreign gourmands.  "Once these horses enter the path to the slaughterhouse, their treatment is not humane in any way." testified Dr. Patricia Hogan, an equine veterinary surgeon.  "Horses have done so much for us in our country's history," said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Humane Society of the United States. Tell congress persons and senators to support of H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act - an excerpt from Care2.com...KEEP TWEETY SAFE WITH BIRD POISON PREVENTION TIPS:
According to statistics compiled by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), more than 525 instances of pet birds being exposed to potentially dangerous common household items were reported last year.
Birds are highly sensitive to inhalant fumes. Avoid exposing yours to fumes from self-cleaning ovens, overheated cookware, automobile exhaust, tobacco smoke, glues, paints, insecticidal fumigants, perfume and hair spray.  Keep all prescription and over-the-counter drugs out of beak's reach, preferably in closed cabinets. Pain killers, cold medicines, anticancer drugs, vitamins and diet pills are all examples of human medications that can be lethal to birds, even in small amounts.  Emergency number (888) 426-4435  an excerpt from the ASPCA e-newsletter...
WE GET LETTERS:
'I loved your column in the August 25, 2006 of Home Reporter.  I am so glad that you are making people realize that adopting three-legged kitties, kitties with special needs, and ferals is a good thing to do because they make wonderful pets. You are doing such a great service to all of God's critters'. Cat DeCapua
Thank you Cat.  I appreciate your kind words.

PEROXIDE UPDATE:  This brown little bottle of inexpensive antiseptic liquid is EXCELLENT for cleaning.  It has more practical uses than for just cleaning up cat hairballs and human abrasions.  In an empty spay bottle I've mixed fifty percent water with fifty percent peroxide.  I've cleaned mirrors and had no streaking, faucets, kitchen table, cabinets, stove etc! Everything sparkles.  There are no chemicals in Peroxide, no smells and it's a great germ disinfect.

MUFFIN'S PET CONNECTION, THE COLUMN, is one year old on August 26! Thank You Mr. Frank Griffin for publishing Muffin's weekly Reach, Teach and Educate Public Service column.  I've re-connected with old acquaintances and made new friends who are now dedicated Home Reporter readers...
UPDATE:  Calay, the rescued, near death three-legged 6 week old kitten, whose badly infected short back paw was dangling, is now healthy and five pounds.  She's five and a half month old, and was spayed by Dr. Sinha.  She came home wearing a protective cloth body stocking, which covered most of her little body.  It was supposed to stay on for two weeks.  Even though Calay was still under the affects of the anesthesia, in ten minutes she became the masterful HOUDINI, and managed to wobble and sway herself right out of the body stocking.  Three legged PeggySue and sixteen year old KungFu Scooter are giving Calay the healing time and space she needs.  She'll let them know when it's kitty playtime.
RESCUED CATS BRING JOYFUL PURRS...'Maggie was rescued from a car engine.  I tried everything to lure her out.  About to give up, I started meowing.  She immediately started crying louder and quickly climbed down.  Maggie was a loving friend to me and Spike, until she passed away at ten years, in June 2006. - written by Teresa Romano
ANOTHER RESCUE TAIL...'I am so glad that I adopted my semi-feral Lily. I love her so much. When I first got her she used to hide from me and hiss at me. With time, patience, care, and love, she has come a long way. Now she lets me kiss her and pet her and she can be very playful. She even sleeps in the bed with me when she feels like it. A former hater of other cats, Lily now gets along very well with my other cat Tumbleweed. They eat together, play chase and sleep near each other. They have a lot of fun together. Most importantly, the two of them make me laugh and smile'. submitted by Cat DeCapua.
FYI: PEROXIDE IS GOOD FOR CLEANING UP AFTER KITTIES- It's an inexpensive, healthy, multi task all purpose cleaner.  I've used it on wiping up hairball messes on the carpet and bed. I poured it directly on the stain and it immediately bubbled up.  I wiped it off with a paper towel. There was no chemical after smell or stain.  Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 1920's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. submitted by Janet Bernasconi from www.janetscreativepillows.com
YOUR HELP NEEDED TO STOP BILL THAT'S BAD FOR BIRDS:...Every year, millions of day-old baby chicks are sent through the U.S. Postal Service by commercial hatcheries and cockfighting breeders. The birds are literally packed in boxes and mailed, without food or water and without concern for temperature extremes. This inhumane practice results in the death of countless baby chicks. Contact the ASPCA Advocacy Center ask them to oppose S. 2395. - submitted by the ASPCA & Care2.com

'ADOPT-ME-PURRS' FROM AROUND BENSONHURST
Stevie Wonder, a blind, fun loving, vocal, 8 week old, light orange tabby kitten, sings  'I WANT TO BE ADOPTED'.  Little Stevie, the runt of the litter, had badly infected eyes , which caused his blindness. He was rescued from a backyard along with Tab and Bat, his brown tabby brothers.  Lauren from Dr. Sinha's Animal Clinic, enjoys the kittenish antics from the bros, but says, 'they need a home.'  Little Stevie, the singer, chirps his greetings to Lauren.  They've been de-wormed, all are litter trained, have great personalities and appetites.  Please open your heart and your home to little Stevie.  He's a 'Special' kitty on a teaching mission.  God kissed his little eyes.  If you look past his sightless eyes, you'll see his loving heart.  When little Steve gets adopted, Muffin's will subsidize his neutering at Dr. Sinha's Animal Clinic.  Please call 718-449-7800 and go and see Stevie Wonder.  Mention that you read about little Stevie Wonder in the Home Reporter...
MACY'S MIRACLE:  Macy, a rescued, 8 week old solid black, flea infested, malnourished kitten, with two severely infected red bulging eyes, was rushed to the vets hospital.  Sadly her eyes could not be salvaged.  BUT her life was saved.  God kissed her little eyes.  She's Special and on teaching mission.  Macy's been adopted and living with Miriam and her four adult cats.  Macy is the Queen Bee!  She leaps in the air catching a tossed toy, runs, jumps, plays and chases after the other cats! Read about Macy's Miracle  http://muffins.org/Macy'sMiracle.htm
BB GUN HORROR:  Sweet Sammy a 2 year old black kitty, was found with one eye shot out by a BB gun.  His other eye was badly infected. Your generous contributions made it possible for Muffin’s to subsidized his medical treatment.  Sammy was adopted by a Karen, who was smitten by his charm and his laid sweetness.  Karen looked into Sammy's heart and fell in love.  See Sweet Sammy's picture at www.muffins.org

PAW PRINTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD:  In Southwest Mouding County, China, officials have brutally clubbed, poisoned, and electrocuted 50,000 dogs, in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies.  This was not humane euthanasia. Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot.  The slaughter was completely preventable. Had the government been more attentive and proactive about rabies vaccination, rabies would not have become a problem in the first place.  Prevention is the Solution, not random killing of innocent dogs. The ASPCA reports that ACETAMINOPHIN IS DANGEROUS TO PETS.
In 2005, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) handled close to 300 cases from around the country. (888) 426-4435 Explains the APCC’s Dana Farbman, “Depending on the amount ingested, clinical effects can include a condition called methemoglobinemia, which affects blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen to vital organs.” In addition, liver damage and even death could result. -an excerpt from the ASPCA e-newsletter.
JUDE'S BOOK CHOICE: 'Cesar's Way' by Cesar Millan with Melissa Jo Peltier is excellent!  This pawfect dog psychology book teaches the petowner how to be empowered by becoming the calm assertive PACK LEADER.  When the dog learns boundaries, structure and limitations he/she will follow the Pack Leader.  EXCERCISE, DISCIPLINE and AFFECTION in that order is the way to have a dog in balance with nature.  Cesar has 39 rehabilitated Rottweilers, Pit bulls, German Shepherds and mixes, all living together in balance at his Psychology Center.
CESAR'S SUMMER DOG TIPS:
1-EXERCISE YOUR DOG EARLY IN THE MORNING OR LATE AT NIGHT. These are the cooler parts of the day, and this will make the walk more comfortable for both you and your dog.
2-USE DOGGIE BOOTS. You can find these at your local pet supply store. If you can’t walk your dog during the early and later hours of the day, this is a good way of protecting it. Heat rises from the ground, especially on surfaces like cement and asphalt. dogs absorb and release heat through their feet. Just like boots prevent the dog from absorbing the cold in the winter, they also isolate heat.
3-WATCH FOR SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION. Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot and it may appear a little pale.
Go with Calm Assertive Energy and be in balance!

MUFFIN'S NEW REACH, TEACH AND EDUCATE AWARENESS PROGRAM - ADOPT-A-SPECIAL physically challenged pet.  Sometimes kittens and puppies are born with a shortened little limb, a paw defect.  Once vetted and declared healthy, these hobblingly creatures can be adopted. They're awesome pet companions, as they do not know they are slightly disabled.  They speed run, jump and play just like any other kitty.  As you have been reading here, Muffin's recently adopted two SPECIAL KITTIES. Three year old PeggySue, was born with a front left paw stump. Norm rescued her from the basement in our apartment building.  He trapped and brought this semi-feral cat to be spayed and vetted.  We were surprised when the vet discovered that she had already been spayed.  PeggySue came from a home!  But how did this frightened cat end up in our basement?  We  posted fliers, listed her on the internet for months, BUT no one claimed her.  Calay the three-legged rescued kitten, almost died.  Her mom abandoned her because she was born with a partial right rear paw. She had to fend for herself on the street and her little paw became badly infected.  Teresa Romano rescued, vetted and saved her life! "God kissed her little paw.. she's special NOT disabled. She's on a mission to teach."- beamed Teresa.
Recently I received a call asking if I remembered Mary, who seventeen years ago adopted Frisky and Tiger, the three legged male kitten. Of course I remembered!  It's not everyday a three-legged kitty is adopted! They are purrfectly fine.  Liz from Narrows Animal Hospital adopted two three legged cats. They're having a blast with the other cats and enjoying life!  When adopting a pet, please don't over-look the three legged puppy or kitten.  They are on a teaching mission to enlighten us about God's SPECIAL ANIMALS....more about Muffin's AWARENESS program next week.

PLANTING TO HEAL:  CELEBRATING LIFE!  Part 11  As I previously mentioned, when fifteen and a half year old Popeye and fifteen year old Coco crossed over the Rainbow Bridge three days apart, it left a huge whole in my heart.  Our apartment had been filled with the joyful energy from seven cats, Muffin our dog, two ten year old Red Ear Slider turtles and a 20 gallon aquarium.  We felt the emptiness.  Scooter was now alone and depressed.  I rooted cuttings from my Spider and Philodendron plants, and called this new plant POPCO (after Popeye and Coco) Nurturing and caring for POPCO gave me closure and healing.  Their lives are continually celebrated.  Their energy lives on.  Go to www.muffins.org/PlantingToHeal.htm and see the picture of POPCO.
PLANTING TO HEAL is God's way of giving us comfort, hope and Spiritual healing when our beloved pets return home.  Cathy DeCapua is rooting three Philodendron cuttings in Loving Memory of her Vixen kitty.
Teresa Romano is also rooting two cuttings from her Philodendron plant in Loving Memory of her kitty friend Maggie.  Cher is rooting cuttings from the Wandering Jew and a Spider cactus plants in Memory of six year Tigger cat and her nine year old Ferret, Whitey.  Right now, I'm rooting three new POPCO cuttings which will be given to Cathy, Teresa and Cher.  We will trade plants with each other, keeping our pets energy circulating.  Each plant with have a laminated picture of the pet right on the front of it.  When Cathy and her mom Joannie Locicerio came to my apartment, they saw my POPCO plant, met Kung Fu Scoots, Calay and PeggySue (on a video) We laughed and had a fun time celebrating life!
UPDATE ON BARBARO: This athlete is fighting for his life.  He has laminitis, a disease that damages tissue bonding the horse's bone and inner wall of the hoof.   Sadly the prognosis is poor, according to his primary veterinarian Dr. Dean Richardson. But Barbaro is eating and his spirits are high.  - an excerpt from Care2.com

PLANTING TO HEAL:  We utterly and wholeheartedly love our pets! We have no reservations about sharing our hearts with a furry or feathered friend.  They are loyal, funny and emotionally connected to the needs in our heart.  As George Elliot said - 'Animals are such agreeable friends ... they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms'. They don't care if we're not wearing make-up, have rollers in our hair or not strutting in chic designer jeans.  They just love is US.  We become the human center of their universe.  When we have a bad hair day, they do their 'thing' to  help us 'snap out of it'.  By stepping-out of ourselves and caring for our pet companion, we strengthen a bond, an unbelievable feeling of irresistible love.  This is a extraordinary gift from the Lord. Each pet, our Angel, is on a mission to help us!  When their earthly journey is done,  Our Angels are called back home. They make their way to the Rainbow Bridge, where they are welcomed by other pets who have already crossed over.  In August of 2004, two of our cats, fifteen and a half year old Popeye, and fifteen year old Coco, passed away three days apart.  When both cats were thirteen years old they were diagnosed with major health issues. Popeye had an inoperable Thyroid tumor on his neck, right next to his trachea.  There was no treatment for Popeye.  His vets just said 'make him comfortable'.  Coco was diagnosed with a hyper active thyroid and given pills. For twenty-one months, I did hands-on-prayer healing with Popeye.  His blood count was 4%.  It should have been 20-50%.  After one year with the prayer healing, Popeye's blood count went to 13%.  Popeye was teaching me and I still had a lot to learn.
To read about Popeye's incredible journey, go to www.muffins.org/PlantingToHeal.htm  Coco and Popeye knew when it was their time to return home.  She left first and three days later Popeye followed his girl.  Their missions were accomplished.  I immediately took cuttings from my Spider and Philodendron plants and made a POPCO plant.  I did this memory of Popeye and Coco.  Everyday day I'd talk to the cuttings, nurturing them to root.  I'd add water to the POPCO cuttings.  When the roots were strong and healthy, I'd add a tablespoon of potting soil to the POPCO cuttings daily. This way the roots don't go into shock when re-planting.  Today POPCO is big, healthy and Popeye and Coco's energies are with me.  More about PLANTING TO HEAL next week.

'GOD KISSED CALAY'S little paw' said rescuer Teresa Romano. 'She's on a mission teaching us that she's SPECIAL NOT disabled'.  All God's creatures who like three-legged PeggySue and Calay, were born with a paw birth defect, are SPECIAL.  Thirteen week old Calay is a purrfect little energized teacher.  She is showing frightened PeggySue how to play kitty hide 'n seek, to swat at the cat dancer together and how to chase after her.  Sixteen year old Grandpa Scoots, 'struts his stuff' showing off his big bushy tail to fun-loving Calay.  She immediately runs after him, pursuing his raccoon-type tail.  She has 'this thing' for Scooter!  Big time.  Calay is in balance and has brought life, laughter, joy and energy into our lives.  Everyday this little kitten teaches us something new.  We're training her about boundaries, structure and limitations.  Calay is showing us that even though she's a three legged kitty, she's a speed runner!  Princess Calay is a work-in-progress, which you will read about here.  She's amazing.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS & THANK YOU - Elyse Karnes and Shirley Grossman for their generous 'Calay' contributions...Dr. Michael Keschner from Pet Haven Animal Hospital for being a part of Muffin's Pet Connection and helping to stop pet over-population!...For everyone who spays a feral cat, preventing the birth of 100 homeless kittens...

FUN FACT: Cats are the only domestic animals that walk directly on their claws, not on their paws. This method of walking is called "digitigrade". When cats scratch furniture, it isn't an act of malice. They are actually tearing off the ragged edges of the sheaths of their talons to expose the new sharp ones beneath.

Purrs from around Bay Ridge:  UPDATE - Bess, the three legged 6 week old kitty who was near deaths door, was saved by Teresa Romano.  When Teresa rescued her, Bess had 103 fever, was flea infested, malnourished, starving and her back hind paw was dangling and badly infected.  Dr. Sinha first examined Bess, and he thought her infected paw, a birth defect, would need to be surgically removed.  He prescribed Clavamox and lots of TLC.  For weeks Teresa nurtured, loved, and force-fed this tiny little calico kitten.  When Bess was ten weeks old, Muffin's subsidized the four blood tests and shots.  We prayed and anxiously waited for the test results.  Bess is a healthy, 3.2 pound playful kitty and does not need surgery on her little stumpy.  Bess was ready to be adopted.  But finding a home for a three-legged kitty is not that easy.  In previous columns, I mentioned that Norm rescued three legged PeggySue from the basement of our apartment building. She has accepted Scoots, our 16 year old Maine Coon mix cat.  She is a youthful three year old who wants to play.  Grandpa Scoots is retired! He does not play!  After soul searching and praying, Jude and Norm adopted ten week old Calee` (pronounced Calay) AKA Bess as a playmate for PeggySue.  Precious Calee` is a calm, sweet, funny, lap kitty whose purrs melted our hearts.  Scoots and PeggySue are not sure of this little intruder, who is currently in a cage in our living room.  PeggySue hides, Scoots walks past the cage, but right now, neither cat is interested in meeting calm Calee`.   Stay tuned: you'll read about THE introduction here as I get tips from Emma DeRosa, THE CAT WHISPERER. straysrus@webtv.net  Many Thanks and accolades to Guardian Angel Teresa Romano.  God Bless! ***

PURRRS FROM AROUND BROOKLYN...Bess,
a six week old, starving, flea infested three-legged kitten was rescued by Teresa Romano, from Bensonhurst.  The kittens right hind leg was dangling and badly infected. Romano brought her to Dr. Sinha's Animal Clinic in Bensonhurst.  After examining Bess, Dr. Sinha prescribed Clavamox for the infection.  He feels that Bess was born with the shorter leg, and that the entire dangling paw needs to be surgically removed.  This beautiful semi-long hair Calico kitty needs medical assistance and a forever home.  Romano called Muffin's for help.  Muffin's will be able to subsidize the surgery because of the caring students from P.S. 273 and  P.S./IS 206.  They participated in the Common Cents Penny Harvest program, collected pennies and made generous contributions to Muffin's.  At this writing, gentle Bess is on antibiotics, gaining weight and learning how to play.  She's on the healing road to wellness and growth.  She'll be tested for Aids/Leuk.  Then the leg surgery will be performed by Dr Sinha.  When Bess is ready to be adopted, she will be listed here, on www.muffins.org and www.petfinder.com  *Many Thanks* to the Students from P.S. 273 and  P.S./IS 206 who chose Muffin's, to Teresa Romano for rescuing and nurturing sickly Bess and to Dr. Sinha for his kind assistance.  Thank you and God Bless! ...

HOOF PRINTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD:  Barbaro, the three year old Kentucky Derby winner, sustained a life threatening fractured leg injury at the Preakness on May 20, '06.  This Champion race horse endured a six-hour surgery that left him with a plate and 27 screws in his right hind leg.  The chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, from the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals who performed the operation, says it could be two months or more before it is known whether Barbaro will survive. However the latest word on the horse, reported around the world, is that he "is stable and happy." REASONS TO ADOPT AN OLDER DOG: Loyalty! Chances are good that by adopting a senior mutt, you have rescued a wonderful, loving canine from an untimely, unfortunate and unwarranted death. A senior mutt can sense that he or she was saved and will be eternally loyal to his or her new “forever” family.. Senior mutts are mellow, relaxed and ready for a new home. They are past the puppy chewing and destruction stage and usually come with basic training. Most senior mutts are happiest sitting at your feet or curled up in their bed next to yours.. No Huge Lifestyle Change.. You don't need to worry about puppy proofing your house and constant training. Older dogs let you get a good night's sleep! Stress Reliever.. Life today can be very hectic. Studies have shown that animal guardianship can decrease blood pressure levels and reduce stress. Senior mutts enjoy leisurely walks, which will encourage you to exercise for even a few minutes on your busiest days- excerptS from 911.com Newsletter

NATIONAL DOG BITE PREVENTION WEEK:  Join us in helping to reduce the 4.7 million dog bites that take place each year in the United States. Of the 800,000 of those that are bitten and seek medical attention, half are children.  Dog bites are often preventable when the following precautions are taken:
FOR YOUR DOG: Do not play aggressive games (e.g. wrestling) with your dog. Train your dog to respond to basic obedience commands; he/she should respect social rules and discipline.
Neuter or spay your dogs to reduce aggressive tendencies.
Seek professional advice (from veterinarians, animal behaviorists, etc.) if your dog demonstrates aggressive or undesirable behaviors.
FOR YOUR CHILD:  Children should not approach an unfamiliar dog.
Do not leave younger children alone with a dog – even if that dog is “familiar” to them (family dog, neighbor’s dog, etc.).
Acknowledge when a child is fearful or apprehensive and delay interaction with the dog.  Children should not run or scream when approached by an unfamiliar dog, but remain motionless without looking directly into the dog’s eyes.  If knocked down by a dog, children should curl up in a ball and be still.  Encourage children to immediately report a dog bite to an adult.
FOR EVERYONE:  With an unfamiliar dog (e.g. lost dog), approach slowly and quietly, while allowing the dog to sniff the back of your hand.
Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating/drinking, chewing on a bone or other toy, caring for puppies, etc. Do not reach into a fenced area, dog run or car to pet a dog.  -an excerpt from 911.com The Companion

PAW PRINTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: The HSUS and the Humane Legislative Fund lobby for state and federal laws to protect animals from cruelty suffering are working to prevent   NO PETS LEFT BEHIND- Save Pets Before Disaster Strikes again! Hurricane Katrina exposed a gaping hole in our government's disaster plans: The government had no plan to care for pets in disasters. As a result, many people stayed in their devastated homes and communities precisely because government responders told them their animals had to be left behind.  What's wrong with this picture? No one should have to choose between their own safety and the lives of their pets. We can never let that happen again.  Hurricane season is fast approaching.  Let's pray that animals are not stranded.

Time is running out to get the U.S. Congress to pass an important bill to help prevent animals from dying. The Antifreeze Bittering Act (H.R. 2567) requires manufacturers of ethylene glycol antifreeze to add a bittering agent to make the antifreeze unpalatable. Children and animals are drawn to the sweet taste of antifreeze, which is fatal in very small amounts. The addition of a bittering agent would help prevent the thousands of poisonings of children and animals that occur every year.  For more information Log onto http://www.ddal.org/...

PLEASE - NO FLEAS!
Flea season is here.  More than a discomfort, fleas can cause serious illness.  Some pets are allergic to flea bites, and the reaction can trigger a cycle of itchy, inflamed skin, and flea dermatitis. They’re also transmission agents for a host of diseases, including some that can be fatal.   Such as anemia, intestinal parasites, malnutrition.  Symptoms may be weight loss, weakness from anemia, scratching, sores on the body.  Not only must you treat your pet, you must treat the environment. You must thoroughly vacuum to eliminate eggs and larvae.  Use a flea product on dogs bedding, cushions, and etc.  You also have to treat your home, and yard.

Speak to your vet about flea products that are safe for your pets.
Your vet should also test and treat for tapeworms.  Your pets can get tapeworms from grooming themselves and then digesting the flea eggs.  An excellent homemade conditioner from Dr. Picairn’s COMPLETE GUIDE TO NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS AND CATS promotes a glossy coat and helps repel fleas is as follows:

1 teaspoon dried rosemary (1 tablespoon fresh)1 pint boiling water combine and steep for 10 minutes strain, cover, and cool.  Pour it over pet after bath as a rinse, towel dry and leave on.

Always remember to ask you vet about any treatments before trying them.  WHISPER’S TIPS: Cats tend to be left pawed. Cats lead more frequently with their left paws than their right.

PURRFECT MEWS ABOUT PEGGYSUE:  Her second stool test was negative for Giardia.  The five day pill treatment worked.  She has already been treated for URI (upper repertory infection) fleas, (we used Frontline) and Giardia.  The Scooter and PeggySue kitty duo, are  inadvertently beginning to play with each other.  I've tied bows to the end of a long shoelace, placing a bow in front of each cat.  They each begin swatting at the bow, and pulling on the shoelace.  I've also put some herbal cat nip on the bows.  They 'chill out' together, relaxing. Soon they'll be dating!  They've come a long way since PeggySue came into our home and hearts.

WHAT IS GIARDIA?  It's an intestinal parasite that pets and people can get. PeggySue, our rescued three-legged kitty was diagnosed with Giardia.  Dr. Adrian Alexandru from the Animal Clinic of Bay Ridge took the time to clarify this perplexing parasite that invaded PeggySue's intestine.   According to Dr. Alexandru Giardia is a very stubborn parasite to treat as Giardia is on the cats fur.  Dr. Alexandru explained that when a cat uses the litter pan and covers the feces, the dust from the litter flies around and settles on the cats tail.  The kitty then cleans itself, licking off the litter and ingesting the tiny microscopic Giardia eggs, which then goes into the intestine.  If another cat cleans the infected kitty, or uses the same litter pan, the parasite is transmitted to a new host.  After petting PeggySue, we washed our hands thoroughly before playing with sixteen year Scooter.  PeggySue is being treated for a mild case of Giardia with metronidazole.  This pill is given once a day for five days.  In three weeks her stool will be tested again.  If she still has Giardia, the five day pill treatment is repeated.  And again in three weeks the stool is tested.   PeggySue's results will be reported next week.
I had many questions about this parasite and Dr. Alexandru kindly loaned me two of his veterinary medical books so I could learn more about Giardia.  'The 5 Minute Veterinary Consult - Canine and Feline' by Larry P. Tilley D.V.M and Francis W.K.  Smith, Jr D.V.M and 'Parasitology for Veterinarians' by Jay R. Georgi, D.V.M, PhD were very informative and insightful books.  I have a new perspective and understanding about this pesky parasite in pets and people.
FACTS ABOUT Giardiasis (GEE-are-DYE-uh-sis) is a diarrheal illness caused by a one-celled, microscopic parasite.  Once an animal or person has been infected with Giardia intestinalis, the parasite lives in the intestine and is passed in the stool.  It can survive outside the body and in the environment for long periods of time, because the parasite is protected by an outer shell.
WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?  Giardia is found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the feces from infected humans or animals.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GIARDIA? Bloody Diarrhea, gas, cramps or upset stomach.
TREATMENT:  The drugs of choice are metronidazole and quinacrine.
For more information about Giardia check out http://www.doh.wa.gov/topics/giardia.htm
Thank you Dr. Alexandru for your help, teaching knowledge and medical expertise.

em&Charlie223.jpg (16891 bytes)FERAL CAT SPECIALIST Emma DeRosa was an answer to many rescuers prayers.  For more than thirty years, Emma re-homed thousands and thousands of homeless animals.  She offered hope to daunting cat dilemmas.  Emma has a keen insight to a cats personality and can distinguish between a frightened or feral feline.  She tunes into a cat and senses their needs. DeRosa was the President of the Brooklyn Branch SAVE, Silent Animal Voices Echoes, a rescue group serving Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge and surrounding areas.  For ten years she and her six devoted 'Angel Helpers' rescued, vetted, fostered and rehabilitated 1,652 animals.  Nine-five percent were traumatized, fearful or feral street urchins.  DeRosa has excellent techniques for rehabilitating cats and training humans!  Her approach is humane, effective, and works! Emma's Rescue Tips:  First, take the cat to a vet.  Make sure the vet can handle a cat in a trap.  Have the cat tested for Aids/leukemia, spayed or neutered, dewormed, checked for fleas and ear mites.  When the cat is deemed healthy, place in a cage which is set up in your home.  There should be food, water and a litter pan in the cage.  Cover the cage completely with a sheet.  Leave the kitty alone for a couple of days, as this will give the cat a chance to relax, get used to the sounds, come out of the anesthesia and heal from surgery.  After the sheet is removed, cover half the cage with a towel.  This gives the cat a sense of protection.  EVALUATING THE CAT:  a frightened cat stays in the back of the cage hiding.  A feral cat lunges forward and shows signs of aggression. While the cat is in the cage, he/she is WATCHING every move.  Approach the cat gently, speak with a soothing voice and cautiously show your hand.  When the kitty begins eye contact and blinks his/her eyes, you've just been kissed.  Rub or spray your hands with cat nip, then offer a piece of baloney, ham or turkey to the kitty. The cat nip relaxes them and they love the treats.  Always let the cat come to you for this purrfectly delightful treat.  Monitor the cats behavior, as each cat has a different traits and levels of trust.  When you feel the kitty is ready to be let out of the cage, open the door and walk away.  The cat will hide but will come out to eat and use the litter pan.  Don't try to pick up or even acknowledge the cat.  An invisible kitty is living with you.  In time this frightened feline will be your friend.
Emma says, 'I don't believe there is a feral cat that can't be socialized under the right situation.  Every feral needs to be socialized in their own way-every cat has a different personality."  To contact Emma straysrus@webtv.net

HELP Chickens: As reported in Care2.com "The majority of chickens raised for meat are confined in sickly and wretched conditions that compromise their health and well-being. But instead of ensuring humane living conditions, too many poultry companies rely heavily on the use of antibiotics to prevent disease - and both chickens and humans pay the price".  You can help chickens and people by urging Pilgrim's Pride, the nations #2 poultry producer, to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics.  Broiler chickens normally spend their entire lives standing, foraging, or sitting in manure-contaminated litter, which covers the floors to absorb waste.  As the litter becomes increasingly unsanitary, conditions necessitate the use of antibiotics to combat the environmental pathogens to which the birds are exposed. Bacteria that are constantly exposed to antibiotics develop resistance to these drugs. Mickey403.jpg (26481 bytes) Are you allergic to cats and dogs?  Or don't have time to walk a pooch BUT would like a furry friend in your life...A Guinea Pig, Cavies - (kay`-vees) might be the solution to having a 'cute, cuddly pet.  I've had the pleasure of sharing my life with three precious little Piggy's.  Napoleon, was a smooth coat Brown and white laid back male.  His friend SuzyQ, was a beautiful long haired white and black Peruvian Cavy.  Mickey, the Black long haired Peruvian was SuzyQ estranged hubby.  SuzyQ was NOT interested in Mickey! The males were friendlier and had a more outgoing personality.  Whenever the refrigerator door would open, the little Pigs would make the 'weep, weep weep' sound until they were fed some fresh veggies.  They'd eat the required Guinea Pig chow pellets, and drink plenty of fresh water.  According to the Humane Society of the United States, 'these herbivores require a lot of vitamin C, so provide veggies such as kale and cabbage and ask your veterinarian about vitamin supplements. Treat Guinea Pigs to fruits, including melon slices and apples' (but remove the seeds, which are toxic).  Guinea Pigs aren't actually related to Pigs.  They're in the rodent family, like the Beaver, Hamster, Rat or Mouse.  They originated in South America.  Cavies are fascinating little critters. With good care and proper diet, their life span can be from 4 -7 years. The weight for the female is about 1 pound and the male one and a half pounds.  As stated on the 'Welcome to the Guinea Pigs World' informative web site, 'many people believe that they got their name the 'guinea pig', because the sailors sold them for one guinea and they make squeaking noises like a pig'. www.pimms-pages.co.uk   Ron Hines DVM PhD, wrote 'Guinea Pigs as Pets', www.2ndchance.info/guineapigcare.htm, and stated that "If you decide to purchase two pigs, make them both immature females"
These funny pet companions, are full of energy and magical charm for children too.  Always do your HOMEWORK first before getting a pet.  Make sure no one is allergic to a Guinea Pig, go to the library and get books out about the care and up keep of a Cavy.  Make sure there is a warm area in your home to set up the cage or tank for your new critter friend.  Check about supplies needed: a brush for the long haired Guinea Pig, food pellets, etc.  Cavies are fastidious cleaners, and love grooming.

PegSu1020.jpg (6886 bytes)Paws Update about four year old PeggySue, the three legged  semi-feral Charcoal gray kitty:  Norm from Muffin's rescued this frightened cat from the basement of our apartment building.  We approach all of our animals with calm assertive energy, which we learned from Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer.  Jude contacted Emma DeRosa, the Feral Cat Specialist, whose socializing tips have been purrrfect.  Emma suggested that Peggy Sue's cage be moved into the living room, as she needs to get used to the everyday sounds of our apartment, including the music I love.  PeggySue is now rocking n' rolling to my favorite oldies of the 50's and 60's.  Emma next advised that we to hand feed PeggySue deli cuts of baloney, ham and turkey white breast.  She purrs up a storm and allows us to pet her, while she's eating these tasty treats from our hands.  Sixteen year old Scoots, our not so friendly senior resident kitty, is also enjoying these goodies.  Scooter and PeggySue have been introduced to Organic cat nip.  This has been a great way for them to mellow-out separately and 'together'.  Emma suggested that we put some cat nip outside Peggy's cage for Scoots, and some inside the cage for Peggy.  They roll around, purr, relax and began to swat at the feather toy and long shoe lace which is hanging on cage.  PeggySue is learning to play and trust us.  Scooter has to feel that he's still the numero-ono KING.  He is learning to share us. This is a huge feat for him.  Sunday, PeggySue was stretched out laying on her back in the cage, rather than cowering behind the litter pan.  Exposing the tummy is a very vulnerable position for any pet, especially for a cat with Peggy Sue's background.  Emma has a great connection and compassion with rescued cats. She recognizes the difference between frightened and feral.  She feels that with time, patience and soft soothing words, PeggySue and Scooter will become best buds! Onward Always...Backwards Never!

The US has found another case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (
BSE), a blow against the country's recent success at regaining its international beef markets. Alabama is still not sure where the infected cow with mad-cow disease was born and raised.  This animal had no ear tags, tattoos or brands.
